Firenze - Florence

The beautiful city of Florence was the destination today, and the current favourite of the cities we have visited so far!!

Our EF family grew a little bigger today when we gained six new members, five students and one teacher from Horton Highschool, a local school that is not far up from our own KES campus. The groups are blending well and everyone has made six new friends.

We began our guided tour of the city in front of the Duomo (bellisimo!) where everyone could marvel at the mammoth green, white and pink structure. After leaving the Piazza del Duomo our tour guide took us to Piazza Della Signoria near the famous Uffizi Gallery and the Ponte Vecchio - Old Bridge. Our students were surprised to learn that the Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge to survive the second World War, Hitler ordered every other bridge destroyed as the German’s fled Italy.

The city was unusually crowded with students today as there was a rally for climate change, literally hundreds of students were marching through the streets. Not only are the kids learning about the country's history but also it’s future.

Florence is also the home of the Medici family, one of the most prominent Familie so in Italian history. Students have noted the many reoccurring instances that the Medici name is mentioned. Free time in the afternoon allowed everyone to visit the Medici Chapels.

The evening ended with a group super at a local restaurant in the city centre. After a long day of walking, shopping and once again gelato eating, it was well deserved break with great italian food!

On to Roma for the next few days,
